Ken's fear of water
on 2021-02-02 02:46 am (UTC)fill: don’t let me drown
on 2021-04-02 05:05 pm (UTC)ken looks unsure, standing hip-deep in the ocean waves in nothing but a sleek pair of swim trunks, wringing his wet hands anxiously until daisuke reaches out and takes one.
“just — listen to this,” he says, curling ken’s hand to his pale chest to feel the rhythm inside, which slows to a calm march like his own despite ken’s nervous exterior. “i’ll keep you steady.”
their synchronization seems to reassure him, and he allows daisuke to spin him around, his feet sliding awkwardly over the sand and shells beneath them.
“it’s like a trust fall,” daisuke instructs, placing his hands on his shoulders to guide him. “you trust me, right?”
ken nods his head, his inky wet hair clinging to the back of his neck. daisuke gives him a gentle tug, and, trusting, ken lets himself slip backward into the ocean.
“daisuke—!” he yelps as his head hits the water, but it doesn’t go under. daisuke has one hand laid flat between his shoulder blades and slides the other down his spine, stretching his back out straight so he won’t sink. trailing his fingers back up the slick planes of his torso laid flat atop the water, he watches ken’s eyes slip shut, and he counts the beats in his head along with him as ken floats on the waves, deeply focused on the inner tide ebbing and flowing between them.
that is, until the one outside overtakes them.
“ken!” daisuke cries as he breaks the surface with his unconscious partner in his arms. he’d gone limp the second the waves swallowed him, giving himself to the sea. but daisuke wasn’t letting him go.
he lies ken on his back on the sand and descends upon him, trembling hands skittering over a chest that’s gone deathly still, a heart that’s fallen frightfully out of sync with his own panicked pounding. he’s seen enough movies to know he’s supposed to get the air in him and the water out, but he can’t remember in which order or how, and just ends up kissing him at the exact moment that he awakens with a start and sputters seawater into daisuke’s mouth.
“told you i wouldn’t let you drown,” daisuke chuckles weakly, so relieved he can’t even be embarrassed, before a bewildered ken reaches up and smashes their lips together again, stealing away the breath he’d only barely caught.

FILL - Swimming Lessons (part 1)
on 2021-04-16 10:41 pm (UTC)Ken had joined the other chosen children on his first beach day ever. The sun was blazing, a refreshing wind was blowing, and the waves were crystal blue. It was the perfect day to spend on the beach, but anxiety had Ken in a stranglehold. For starters, he felt way too exposed in his swimwear, a tight pair of black swimming trunks his mother had kindly bought for him when he had told her about his plans to join his friends at the beach. His mother had been delighted for him, but she had given him clear instructions to stay close to the shore and to only wade in the water.
Ken crossed his arms over his bare chest as he gazed out at the shore, where the rest of his friends were laughing and playing, tossing a beach ball high into the air. He was self conscious about his bony frame, but that was his least concern at the moment. Beyond the joyful faces of his friends loomed the vast swell of the ocean. It spread out, covering everything, hiding unspeakable secrets. He looked at the waves that kept coming from somewhere out there, coming in and lapping at the shore, lapping and then retreating. Everything swayed with the same aimless movement, in and out, in and out. The ocean was breathing. It was calling to him. Ken tried hard not to give in to the spots of grey creeping at the edges of his vision, to the fear that gripped him.
“Ken, come on! Come play!” Daisuke was calling him again, and Ken could hardly resist the cheery, beckoning lilt of the other boy’s voice. He took his first few steps into the sea, feeling the warm water lap around his ankles. He steeled himself and walked further out toward Daisuke, who was standing a good few yards away, submerged to his chest. He started cheering and waving his arms when he saw Ken coming, jumping up and down in the water. Ken pressed on, trying to not think about the fact that the water was getting deeper and deeper for each step, that he was getting further and further away from the safety of the shore. The water was almost up to his chest now, but Daisuke was still so far away. Why was he still so far away? If only he could reach him, everything would be okay.
He focused on Daisuke, on the radiating warmth of his smile that Ken could almost feel hitting him in the face. Then, he saw the wave coming up behind his friend and fear clutched at his heart. But the other boy simply let the wave hit him, moved with the wave, let it carry him up and then down again. Daisuke took no notice – to him, it was second nature. But Ken had seized with fright. The wave was coming towards him now, and it had only gotten larger. He didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to ride a wave like Daisuke did, didn’t know how to not let it take him and bring him under. As he stood there, frozen stiff, the wave crashed into him, rushing in over his head, knocking his feet off the seabed. His eyes and throat closed in panic as he kicked and struggled. His head broke the surface again and he sputtered, disoriented and desperate. He had no time to get his bearings before he saw the next wave coming up fast, this one bigger than the last. He saw his friend bob along with it, even whoop with cheer at being picked up from the ground and put back down. But Ken couldn’t even feel the ground, not anymore – had the wave brought him further out?
Blinding panic gripped him as he flailed and flailed, unable to touch the ground. He tried raising his voice and found that he couldn’t, couldn’t do a thing to stop the ocean from claiming him, just like he knew it would. He could see Daisuke up there ahead of him and he tried stretching out his hand, tried to reach him but it was too late, he was sinking. The last thing he saw was Daisuke swimming toward him before the wave came and swallowed him.
*
He opened his eyes to a whole bunch of faces crowded around him and a terrible heavy ache in his chest. He spasmed and coughed, expelling burning seawater onto the sand.
“Ken!” Daisuke threw his arms around his neck and Ken could only lie there in a dazed and confused state, chest hurting as he breathed.
“Give him some space, let him get his bearings,” scolded Jou-senpai, although he was looking rather relieved himself, wiping his brow.
“Why didn’t you tell me you can’t swim?” Daisuke rounded on him once the others had turned away to give them some peace. ”It’s no wonder you’re scared of the ocean!”
“… Sorry. I didn’t want to be a bother.” Ken had managed to sit up and had drawn his knees to his chest, hugging around them.
“Ken, when are you going to understand that you’ll never be a bother to me?”
Ken looked down at the wet sand. “Sorry…”
“You don’t need to apologize so much, Ken, I’ve told you a thousand times.”
He fought down the urge to say sorry again. Daisuke sighed, then brightened. “Okay, how about this? I’ll teach you how to swim! I’m great at swimming, I’ll be an amazing teacher! How does that sound?”
Ken would rather prefer to never have to go near the ocean again. But Daisuke’s eyes were boring into his in such a sincere way. He didn’t want to let his friend down anymore – he had done enough of that already. He watched a few drops of seawater drop from Daisuke’s hair and trail slowly down the golden skin of his chest, and found himself nodding.

on 2021-04-17 09:18 pm (UTC)They were at the community pool. Its safe rectangular boundary and shallow end made for a good starting point and practice area. Daisuke was brimming with determination, but also a sense of pride – perhaps excited to be able to teach something to Ken for once. He had jumped straight into the pool, glided like a fish at the bottom before vaulting up again, painting a brilliant arch in the air. Ken stood at the edge of the pool, transfixed at the graceful way Daisuke moved in the water. He was uncomfortable in his swimwear once again, and the teal blue water of the pool looked no more inviting to him than the ocean had, no matter if it contained a bare-chested Daisuke or not.
“Come on, you’re never gonna learn how to swim if you don’t get in!” Daisuke called to him, and Ken sat slowly down on the edge of the pool and dipped his legs in the water. Daisuke was not-so-subtly eyeing him as he did so, and he fought the blush that threatened to appear on his cheeks. He hid it by slowly sliding down into the water, making sure his feet touched the bottom safely before letting go of the edge.
“Okay, now lie down on your back in the water.”
“Lie down? How?”
“Here, I’ll show you. Just lift your legs up like this, see—” Daisuke’s hand came under his knees, the other flat over his back, and he started tilting Ken’s legs up, trying to coax him to lie down. Anxiety slammed into Ken again and made his whole body stiff and tense, his breaths quicken.
“Just relax, I’ve got you,” Daisuke’s soothing voice broke through the white light in his mind and he let himself be slowly guided to lie down, legs and arms unfolding. Rationally, he knew the body is composed of sixty percent water, making it buoyant – the lungs are eighty percent water, the brain and heart are seventy. He could recite these facts just as easily as he could multiply by two, but actually being here and putting it to the test made his skin vibrate with fear.
“Good, now lean your head back too.” His hair was getting wet. Ken shivered even as the warm pool water flowed over his body. He leaned his head back until it was as horizontal as the rest of him, never taking his eyes off Daisuke’s encouraging gaze. His friend was still holding him gently under his back and knees, but when he saw Ken was floating he drew his hands away.
“Wait! Don’t let go!” Panic painted the edge of his voice in a shrill tone and he flailed in the water, immediately trying to come back up. Daisuke’s hands came back, securing him again, making sure he didn’t sink through the surface.
“There you go, don’t worry. I’ve got you. Just relax, close your eyes, feel yourself float…”
“I’m gonna sink! Don’t let me sink!” Ken reached out and grabbed onto Daisuke’s arm, gripping it tight. It didn’t matter that they were in the shallow end of the pool. There was a dark, endless chasm between him and the bottom, and it was waiting to swallow him.
Daisuke swished him back and forth in the water a few times as if rocking him, trying to calm him. “Hey, hey. I’m not gonna let you sink, okay? I’ve got you. See? Just lean back and try to relax…”
Ken hesitantly leaned his head back again, feeling the water come up to his cheek and fill his ears. The water in his ears made everything cottony and quiet, drowned out Daisuke’s soothing voice. But he could still feel him, feel his hands holding him gently and securely. Ken felt himself float, weightless on the water’s surface. This didn’t feel so bad. It actually felt… rather comfortable. All of a sudden, he didn’t feel scared anymore. He felt safe, protected in Daisuke’s arms. He slowly lost the tension and tautness in his body, letting it drain away as he relaxed, finally. He lay with his arms spread out, legs slightly parted, eyes closed. He breathed slowly in and out, entering a state of calm as he bobbed gently up and down, moving with the flow of the pool water.
“Look at you! You’re floating, all by yourself!”
Ken blinked his eyes open at his friend’s voice, distorted and warped by the water in his ears. By himself? Come to think of it, Daisuke seemed further away. Ken realised he couldn’t feel his friend’s hands on him anymore and had a moment of conflict between being apprehensive and excited he was floating on his own and wanting Daisuke’s hands touching him again. But Daisuke was smiling at him and he found himself smiling back, relieved.
He came back up again, glad to have his feet back on the tiles. Daisuke slapped a hand on his back with a grin. “You did it!”
They ended up trying again and again until Ken was comfortable floating by himself, feeling less and less like arms were suddenly going to come up and grab onto him from the bottom. Daisuke suggested they start trying to learn the breast stroke, but Ken declined, saying he felt tired. So he sat at the edge of the pool and watched his friend do a few laps around the pool, admiring the muscles in his arms working as he crawled, the water splashing and glittering around him.
Later, Daisuke handed him a juice from the vending machine outside the building. The orange of the setting sun reflected in the windows of the buildings surrounding them. Ken’s towel hung around his neck, wet hair still dripping as they crouched down outside the pool entrance to drink, swimming bags in tow.
“Hey, Daisuke?”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for teaching me to float. This swimming thing doesn’t feel quite so scary anymore now. I mean, I feel like I can manage to learn it.” Ken gave his friend a smile, and Daisuke puffed out his chest. “Damn right! You’re learning from the best teacher ever, after all! Mark my words, Ken, you’ll be swimming like a fish in no time.”
