FILL - Truth or Dare

The empty plastic bottle moves slower and slower as it comes to a halt. Suddenly, the mouth of the bottle stares him in the face like a death sentence.
“Ichijouji-kun, your turn! Truth or dare?” Takeru turns to him with an excited gleam in his eyes. Everyone else cheers while Ken’s shoulders slump.
“Um… I’ll pick dare.” How bad can it be? Iori has just been dared to drink a can of coke in one go, and he managed just fine.
“Alright then, I dare you to… kiss Daisuke-kun on the lips!”
Ken’s mouth drops open, along with everyone else in their little circle on the floor. “What?”
“Come on, it’s just a little kiss! Just a little peck!” Takeru goads. “Surely your friendship can withstand a friendly little smooch?” Hikari and Miyako giggle, while Iori just looks embarrassed. Daisuke’s face looks so hot it might start smoking any minute. Ken’s feels the same.
“Ah… I…” Ken stutters. He blushes hard at the thought of being able to kiss his friend. His heart immediately starts pumping hard, making him sweat and swallow. He looks down at the ground with a secret little smile tugging at his lips. Is this it? Is this the moment he’ll finally be able to get close to Daisuke, closer than he’s ever been, and feel those lips against his? He doesn’t care if it’s just a game – this might be his only chance.
Slowly and reluctantly, he shuffles forward on his knees toward Daisuke on the other side of the circle. He glances up to see his friend pouting and looking away, and his heart falls.
“I’m sorry… I can’t.” His friend looks apologetic, but his voice is firm and unwavering as he rejects him.
“Daisuke…” Is he that disgusted by Ken? He should have known. Two boys kissing is frowned upon. It’s not right. Ken isn’t right for wanting it. He shouldn’t be feeling this disappointed, but he can’t help it. He can’t help getting his hopes up over such a stupid little game. And now his heart is crushed.
He awkwardly shuffles back to his spot, trying not to look too disappointed. He tries to sit through a few more rounds of the game, but it gets increasingly excruciating. He excuses himself and goes to the bathroom. He hears his other friends berating Daisuke once he’s closed the door, but he doesn’t want to listen. He sits down on the closed toilet lid and buries his head in his hands, letting his hair fall haphazardly over his face. His whole face is hot, and he can’t stop the burning in his eyes, can’t stop the tears from springing out and trickling down between his fingers.
He stays there for a long time, cursing himself. He’s so weak and useless. He’s such a loser for crying in the bathroom at what’s supposed to be a fun get-together with his friends. He splashes his face with water, covering his tear tracks. He wipes it all away as best he can, tries not to get lost in the sad pools of his reflection. He puts on his bravest face and goes back to Miyako’s room.
“I’ve got a headache coming on, so I think I’m going to head home. Thanks for having me.” Ken gives a short nod to his friends before turning to leave. The others reluctantly call after him to feel better and to have a safe trip home. He knows he’s being obvious, but he can’t deal with any more social interaction at the moment. He feels so utterly drained.
“Ken, wait!” Daisuke comes scrambling up behind him. Ken’s heart immediately sinks again. What does he want? Ken just wants to be left alone to wallow. He goes to the entrance and grabs his shoes from where they were neatly placed in the genkan and pulls them quickly on. Daisuke rushes to do the same.
“You don’t need to leave early with me, Daisuke. You can stay here.”
“I’ll walk you to the station, alright?” Something desperate is shining in Daisuke’s eyes, but Ken can’t read it. Maybe he feels bad for crushing Ken’s heart. But Ken doesn’t need any apologies – he just needs to be alone.
“Really, it’s fine. Actually, I’d prefer if you stayed here.”
“Wha- But—”
“I’ll see you next weekend. My place, right?” Ken isn’t sure he will be able to have another sleepover with Daisuke so soon, but he has to say something to appease him. Just the thought of staying in Daisuke’s room, looking up at his peaceful, sleeping face, wanting to stroke his golden cheek… it makes his heartstrings give a painful twinge.
He opens the door and starts walking hurriedly without looking back. Still, he knows his friend. He isn’t surprised when he hears Daisuke’s footsteps come running up behind him.
“Wait up!” Daisuke starts walking with him, and because he doesn’t have any more excuses, Ken lets him.
“You don’t really have a headache, do you?”
Ken doesn’t reply, just keeps looking straight ahead as he walks down the hallway.
“Listen… I think I did something really stupid back there.” Ken’s heart gives a little jolt. He waits to hear the rest.
“I hurt you, didn’t I?” Daisuke’s voice comes out sounding like a plea. For what, Ken doesn’t know. He slows his steps until he comes to a halt. He doesn’t know what to say, so he stays silent. Daisuke tentatively grabs his wrist, makes him turn and look.
“But hear me out… I didn’t want to kiss you right there. Not in front of all the others. I don’t want our first kiss to be a game. Like it’s just for show. Like… like it doesn’t mean anything.”
They stand there, right in the hallway of Miyako’s apartment building, staring each other down.
“What…?” Ken isn’t sure he’s hearing right, but the intensity in Daisuke’s eyes tells him different.
“I want my first kiss with you to be special. I want to treasure it, just as much as I treasure you.”
“Daisuke…?” His world must be unraveling. The ground is going to crack beneath his feet and he’ll fall through the gap into the darkness below.
“Ken… Can I kiss you?”
“But you… I thought…”
Daisuke smiles. “Silly… I don’t want anyone other than you.”
Suddenly, his best friend is closer than he’s ever been before. Ken can see the molten gold dancing in his pupils before he closes his eyes. Their lips meet, and the overwhelming emotions Ken is feeling comes out of his eyes again in a steady stream. He’s surprised and happy, but he still hasn’t recovered from his momentary heartbreak. It all comes out, and soon he’s sobbing in Daisuke’s arms. Daisuke wraps his arms around him and holds him through it, rubbing his back and shushing him.
“Ken, I’m sorry! Are you okay? Did you hate it?”
Ken sputters a giggle. “Don’t worry – I liked it. Can you do it again?”
“Oh. Of course!”
As their lips connect again, Ken thinks perhaps he should have picked truth. Sometimes words really are the easiest way to finding happiness. He should have told Daisuke earlier. But if he asks Daisuke to kiss him again, he knows he will. Again and again, over and over.
