Daisuke’s legs finally moved, and he windmilled them so hard he knocked his head into the ceiling, catching himself on the edge of Ken’s loft as he retched over the edge, nothing actually coming up. He focused back on Ken, still trapped down there, and shook his shoulders with probably too much force.
But he had to wake Ken up, now. After the fifth desperate shake Ken groaned in a way distinctively different from how he’d been while asleep, and Daisuke sank down against his chest, tears falling out of him and all over the front of Ken’s pajamas, gratefully, wonderfully still covering and on him.
Ken wrapped around him, shushed and comforted him, after what he’d just been through, and it made Daisuke shake and sob ever harder.
He was supposed to be stronger than this. He was supposed to be able to do anything, to keep going until miracles happened. But he just watched as the haunts from their past continued to come after Ken.
He’d never succeeded in protecting Ken at all.
“I’m okay.” Ken gripped his wrist with a light touch, guiding Daisuke’s hands down and across his side, urging him to feel, to ground himself in this reality.
Daisuke ate it up, not daring to dip under his clothes, needing Ken to have that barrier as much as himself, imprinting himself over Ken’s thighs and ribs and face.
“I’m sorry.” He swept some of Ken’s hair behind his ear, fingering the shell as he moved down and stopped at the side of his neck, holding tight. “I couldn’t - I couldn’t protect you.”
“You did out here.” Ken settled his hands on either side of Daisuke’s waist, pulling him close. “You’re the reason that place can’t pull me in where it actually matters.”
“But it - it all matters.” Daisuke wiped his face with the back of his hand, doing his best to break the wet tracks over it, trying to put as brave a face as Ken had on.
“I can handle it. Please. Don’t - don’t hurt yourself for my sake. I couldn’t bear that.”
Daisuke would run through eternal flames, would climb any mountain, chase any villain if it meant keeping Ken safe, no matter what would happen to him. He sat up, to give Ken space.
To give himself breathing room. Laying on top of Ken, touching him, it was simultaneously so close to everything he’d wanted for a long time and nauseating at the moment.
“I’m staying another night.” He declared instead of answering Ken’s statements.
Ken frowned up at him, lit by the sunrise through his curtains, and Daisuke’s heart twisted. “We have school tomorrow.”
“I can always pop through the gate in the morning.” He had to be here, had to try again.
Even if Ken didn’t want him to. He would persevere until he stopped this or until it completely ripped him apart.
Ken didn’t argue anymore. He seemed more chipper, despite how much worse last night’s dream had seemed to Daisuke, when Daisuke dropped it and didn’t prod any more of his own volition.
He even laughed during their soccer session when Daisuke tackled him to the grass and they rolled and tumbled together, getting stains all over the both of them.
Daisuke fiddled with his bag while Ken took his evening shower and bath, trying not to think about him naked in there, washing away the dirt and grime, coming out nice and clean, looking like the angel he was in a halo of steam.
Daisuke spent his own shower under cold water. It barely helped when Ken initiated after he climbed under his covers, his hand exploring around Daisuke’s chest, pressing over his heart before wandering around to bring their chests together, make them breathe the same air, their mouths achingly close.
“Thank you.” Ken didn’t bother explaining what he was thanking Daisuke for, always so cryptic.
Daisuke tried to sleep instead of thinking about devouring the lips in front of him, what Ken tasted like.
what Ken tasted like to the monsters in his head.

The sandstorm raged around them, and he felt his feet as they struggled to maintain their hold on the dunes below. He had to fight, to defeat this darkness, to keep Ken and the world safe.
It fell to the ground with a crash, and before it even exploded into data Daisuke was scanning for where Ken was in this dreamscape.
He spotted him, cheering with his arms waving in the air, so much smaller than normal, his hair shorter, everything shorter, and Daisuke realized he looked like he did when he was a kid.
Even before he’d met him.
Another kid, slightly older but still definitely an elementary schooler, stood beside him, pumping his fist and smiling down at Ken.
“We did it!”
“You’re amazing, Ryo-san!” Ken engulfed this Ryo guy’s middle in a tight hug, swinging around in the air as he turned in a circle, until their celebration came to a screeching halt.
The air suddenly filled with little black specks, radiating out from where the evil Digimon fell. Daisuke dove to the floor to avoid the wave, and stared at his gangly limbs, all blue with white claws at the tips of his fingers, flexing and tensing them in fascination.
He heard Ken’s scream, but he didn’t see what he expected, one of the specks embedding itself in his neck, instead the other boy was bent over him, his neck pulsing with black-red light as he doubled over.
“Ryo-san! Ryo-san! Ryo!” Ken reached his little hands up, trying to shake his shoulders, but Ryo didn’t see anything anymore.
His neck snapped up and then sideways, and Ryo’s eyes flashed with the same eerie red light before his mouth cracked in two, curling up at the corners in a wide smile.
“You failure,” Ryo spoke, and it didn’t sound like it had earlier. “Pathetic, worthless thing.”
Tears sprang at the corner of Ken’s eyes, and Daisuke laid prone, watching in horror as Ryo’s hands unbuckled Ken’s belt, pulling his pants clean off and forcing two gloved fingers into his mouth.
“You thought you could protect me? Be my partner?” Ryo continued on, shadows coalescing around him as the specks of darkness swirled and created a shape on top of them both. “You can’t even save yourself.”
He forced Ken’s thigh up, twisting his legs apart and sliding between them until his clothed groin pressed against Ken’s small body. He popped his fingers out of Ken’s mouth and trailed his soaked gloves down, down, popping the front of Ken’s shirt open along the way until he slipped that between his legs too.
“Please, Ryo. Don’t.” Ken’s begging fell on deaf ears, and his words fell into jumbled gasps.
Daisuke couldn’t see with the way Ryo bent over Ken, the swarm of the dark seed obscuring most of them, but he knew what was happening, what was making Ken’s tinny voice cry and sob and beg.
It was happening again and he wasn’t doing anything. He clenched his strange hands into fists, his legs springing under him, and he realized.
He was V-mon right now. Could he - could he fight like V-mon, too?
Only one way to find out. He charged the darkness, aiming his head directly at the midsection of Ryo. It knocked him back, and he stood back up, shaking it off.
Ryo was getting further. He could see his twisted arms hiking Ken’s hips up into his lap, his fingers disappearing along the edge he could see. Daisuke took another running headbutt.
This time, he nearly made it, inches from connecting solidly with the core of Ryo before being pushed away by the dark. He’d almost made it. He could do this.
Ken’s whimpers tore him apart even as they spurred him on, desperate to stop them.
“Please. Please stop. I - I lo - I love -“
“That is why you’re so pathetic.” Ryo shifted and Ken cried and Daisuke knew, he had pushed himself inside and he had to stop this now.
This time, the air around him glowed as he jumped into the fray, jumped through the shimmering iridescence and came out the other side taller, spryer, and he tackled Ryo off of Ken, disconnecting him as they crashed into the sand. He stood up, marveling at the gold plates on his long legs, his hands feeling alien as three claws bent and curled at his will.
Ryo sat up, pants undone in the front, his cock sickeningly covered in bits of wet red blood, and that was all Daisuke saw. He punched forward, determined to destroy the thing infesting Ken’s mind.
He landed another solid hit, bursting with gold as the darkness fell away and lifeless to the sand, the black bits smoothing into the storm.
“How - ?” Ryo spat out blood, and he needed more, needed him to bleed as much as he’d made Ken.
He hit him again, the red glow growing more frantic as Ryo skid along the sand like a rag-doll.
“How are you here? How are you doing this?”
“I won’t let you hurt Ken ever again!” Daisuke felt himself heat up, burning from the inside out as his body burst into a bright glow, so bright he couldn’t even see as the blast directed itself in the dark seed-infested Ryo’s direction, whiting everything out for seconds as the world toppled and turned and then righted itself.
The sandstorm was gone. The darkness was gone. There was just him, and Ken, in the now calm desert with a bright blue sky. He dragged himself next to Ken, his shirt open and naked from the waist down, picking him up as gently as possible in his large, gangly arms.
Ken blinked up at him, confusion giving way to recognition and joy. “D-daisuke?”
Daisuke nodded, cradling Ken close to his armored chest, filling with bubbles when Ken reached out and plastered himself to his warmth.
“I’ve got you. I promised, after all.”
“I’m sorry.” Ken moved back enough to look up into Daisuke’s face. “I should have believed you...”
Ken looked down before standing up on Daisuke’s hands, stretching to press a kiss to his helmet.
“I should have known you’d perform a miracle.”
The world shifted around in accordance with Daisuke sudden need to kiss Ken back, and he fell back into the sand with Ken straddling his chest. He was still bigger, in his current high school body, but at least he had lips he could collide with Ken’s, a tongue he could dip inside his mouth with.
He lost complete track of time, the world, the only thing left the way Ken felt against him, the way his saliva tasted, pangs of mint from his toothpaste that had him surfacing out of the dream and into Ken’s actual, physical bed, Ken’s actual, physical body on top of him now as he, too, groaned and blinked his eyes open.
Ken stared down at him, his eyes shining from the soft glow of his nightlight, and bridged the gap between their mouths once again, the feel of his velvet lips against Daisuke so much sharper out here.
